Image analysis is also pretty neat, and so is Machine Learning.

Beyond data analysis, web development is a very popular use for Python, and you can make some amazing things with it.

The third major category that I would classify as "cool" would be robotics. Making physical things actually happen with software you write can be very rewarding.
