interfacing with windows

i think im finally getting the hang of c++ and was wondering where i would start if i wanted to do stuff with opening windows instead of a command promt and graphics.

I'm going to be getting into this as well at some point. I'll be checking out the book "C++ GUI Programming with Qt 4 (2nd Edition)" which can be found on Amazon and also online for free to legally download as the content is open.
