What opportunities are helpful for a self-taught developer?

I'm teaching myself to code, & would like to find ways to help me get my foot in the door experience-wise before I return to college. What types of opportunities do you recommend looking into, & which do you not recommend? Have you seized a particular opportunity that helped you get where you are now? Edit: it was brought to my attention that my question may be a bit too vague. Opportunities would be things such as internships, receptionist positions for comp-science companies, clubs for coders, etc.
