First, you have to learn and practice a lot, then you can start helping students do their homeworks and make money that way, or with web developing, game development, app development and so on...

I've been coding for few years now. I'm not professional, it's more like hobby. However I'm busy with work lately, so I rarely have chance to code.

Let me put this in another context to show how ridiculous it is: - How can you make money with baking? - By selling ovens. - This is not about baking. - But it makes money.

Give them a sample and they will buy the pie... Get feedback: but sell it to them in the upgraded version ( premium ) Never give them the full pie especially not without having a new pie ( version II then 3 ) to sell. Free sample no support... $1.99 extra per month on premium versions. And like @Martin said everyone likes free but... in this case scenario limited time or a limited amount of users ( 1000 ) or a release in Beta development.

It's free, they must have found another way to monetize their product.

@Martin Taylor I disagree. You'll find a conflict of supply and demand in every industry branch.
