The fact that many applications are in PHP is mainly because at one point it monopolized the market share, lol.

Most Hosts offer you by default the combination of PHP + MySQL, because traditionally it was what was used for development. Even with the arrival of other technologies in the beginning the only option to use them was to have your own server or a VPS. Luckily this has been changing, although PHP still has dominance (thanks in part to the most famous CMS)
