How do the elif instructions work I do not quite understand?

lets say tommorow you are planning to go out...
if its sunny outside you dont need a coat. so:
if sunny: wear t-shirt
what about if its not sunny?
if sunny: wear t-shirt
else: wear coat
but what if its not sunny but still not cold enough?..
elif lets you check multiple conditions:
if sunny: wear t-shirt
elif cloudy: wear jacket
else: wear coat
