Besides just a different layout for the operating system, Linux is typically more used with programmers given the terminal provided with the OS. Linux is most often as the base for most other operating systems, and even though the other OSs created with have their own versions of the terminal (such as Windows and the command prompt), the Linux terminal will generally have the most functionality and use out of any of the shells. This allows for many newer options to open up, making some things easier for developers to do.

I prefer linux. Linux is more lightweight, faster and you have total control over your operating system. Oh and way less viruses for linux. Windows is slower, many restrictions and many viruses. Oh and linux does not tend to crash like windows. The only benefit windows has it has more programs that are customer supported.

Just to add since you said programming. Linux compiles faster. When i compile a simple helloworld.c in linux it is instantaneous. In windows it takes about 5 to 10 seconds. And my processor is an I7. Bigger programs will take longer. But keep in mind, in linux you cannot really program in C# and VB if you cared to use those languages. These are windows specific

Linux distros such as Ubuntu have more utilities geared toward development as opposed to Windows.

David Woods Yeah you can do that. Another option is doing a dual boot option if you have enough disk space.
