I would prefer Node.js because it seems easier for me because I already have a great knowledge JS and it would be better to take a completely new language.

as a experience on using php , i say yes Node is popular, and every one is using it but if you work with php then you will know that pHp is easy to read write and easy to understand and about performance it's faster and secure then Node.js . Also node is javascript library so it's not secure too, so using pHp might be helpful

most of the internet is powered by PHP, and its like the English language, as most of the world use it. the reason is that they both take words / code from other sources and incorporate it into their own language.
