Challenges are not necessary, so if you don't want to participate in challenges now, you can turn your weapons off. Open menu by clicking on three dots in the top-right corner, choose "Settings", then "Manage weapons".
When you will be ready for challenges, click on the "Play" tab, then on the "+" button, choose your weapon, choose your opponent, click on the "Start" button.

Go to the Play section(the one with the lightning) and press the plus button to start a new challenge. In a challenge, two users answer 5 questions about a language. The questions are the same for both users. Whoever answers correctly most of the questions is the winner. When you win a challenge you gain XP, when you lose a challenge you lose XP.
