It depends on the linux distribution you want. Linux mint 18.1 is roughly 2Gb. Dual boot is a bit complicated, if you want Windows and linux I would recommend using a virtual box. Windows 10 is approx. 4Gb big, you van use it without a license, just that you will be missing some features like changing the background. Check out Oracle's VM: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/virtualbox/overview/index.html EDIT: Here is a page where you can download VDIs (virtual disk images) directly. Just need to install VirtualBox and run them. https://www.osboxes.org/linux-mint/

The size usually depends on the OS Image you are going to download. While some OS Images are as small as 300 MB, some can be as large as 4 GB. Here is a sample guide for dual booting Ubuntu (ISO size approx 1.8 GB) with Windows 10 : https://www.google.com/amp/s/itsfoss.com/install-ubuntu-1404-dual-boot-mode-windows-8-81-uefi/amp/ Also note that you can also install a software called Virtual Box and load the OS virtually instead of having to install it. That is useful in cases when you wish to install multiple OS. Here is some information on which system may be better for you : https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/dual-boot-vs-virtual-machine/

i would suggest you use virtualization. virtual box is pretty easy and allows you to try almost any os.
