In simple words

If a user sign up on your website you need to store that data somewhere so that if user come back to your website to sign in it remembers user details if they are right it successfully sign in user otherwise show an error.

Place where this data is stored is called Database (There is data of millions of user so data is stored in organized manner so it can be easily fetch when required).
