Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a markup language that defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format which is both human-readable and machine-readable. HTML is a presentation language, while XML is neither a programming nor a presentation language. HTML is used for designing a Web-Page, while XML is used to transport data (in the aspect of defining what that data is, not the transportation itself). It is important to understand that XML is not a substitute for HTML. In the Web, XML is one of the main languages to describe the structure and the Web data, while the HTML language is responsible for displaying the data.
