Why use @font-face over font API?

Question

Is there any benefit of using @font-face to get your font from a file, over just retrieving a font from a font API (e.g. Google)? It seems like additional hastle to declare a new font for each font decoration (like bold).

The only reason i could think to use it would be if you had designed your own custom font. Any other suggestions?
