For making something stick in long term memory your brain needs repetition with gradually increasing time intervals.
Coding a lot is definitely a good recommendation, but there will always be patterns you don't use as often, so some structured learning can help.
What you want to remember 'brute force', repeat after one day, two days after that, four days after that and so on.
