well, this is a loaded question. I suppose it also depends on your definition of success. Beyond that there are tons of ways to become a successful programmer.
I suggest starting by explore the various areas of programming. These generic areas are - web, application, systems, and game programing. Once you have a good grasp on which programming area you enjoy most, stay focused on learning as much as you can about the associated technology and languages. Publish some of your projects on GitHub or on your own website to showcase your abilities and look for different open source projects through Apache or GitHub to contribute. You can also try to find some freelance opportunities to build your resume.
