I ve heard that swift works side by side with objective c but can swift actually be used without combining the code with objective C? Thank you?

Swift was developed by Apple which also developed Objective C languages so yes they can be intertwined together when developing applications.

Yes, Apple is encouraging people to move away from objective c, and to just use Swift.
