"Windows widely used and highly GUI based " ..that I think itself makes it a bit more vulnerable.
It is safe bdw if the user is well aware of the settings.

Things to do:-

* Update regularly and from trusted Microsoft official website.
* Use updated and strong malware sacnners.
*Use Currports or TCP view to monitor open ports.
*Keep Firewall settings restricted.

Not updating software that has patches to fix the security vulnerabilities. Always install software updates.
