Are there any hidden things in SL that newbies must know about???

Question

As im still new im just wondering, since there is no tutorial of how to use SL are there things that i must know that are important but werent spelt out???
2. l hear people talking about groups , not that i want to join one but i want to know what happens in those groups????
3. how is it that one can send me a direct message how is this possible?
<<note i dont intend sending anyone messages but i just thought maybe there are some hidden things since some of us are still partly new to SL>>~π
