Charlie S There's practically just a few fields that C can't be used. Other than that you could use it to write just about anything [interpreters, game engines,3d grapics,applications(objective-c),operating systems, programming languages(ruby,python,lua),servers...]. It's practically endless. I think knowing C is a really valuable skill. Hovinou Jacques you should definitely learn it if your interested.

What type of application? C, today, can be used only in programming microcontrollers and other types of robots with Arduino etc. It is archaic, that's why it can't be used for complex software development or something else. Better learn C++ or python. They will help more. If you know C, C++ won't be a problem.

Astralis. In our days it's no more useful. C had his glory one day, but it's gone. Now we need to use the best tools to create something. If you want to know the begining, just luck how a Shift Register works, or something newer - Algol, COBOL, Fortran. They are the base.
