Why most of the programmes prefer to use c++ for competitive programming?

I am not claiming this is why, but I suspect 1) because it's a compiled language that can be optimized, 2) it's been around forever, and 3) you have flexibility (i.e. code can be written object oriented or procedural, you can program at the machine level, and there's a library for just about anything you can think of including access to other languages).
