Is it better to start as a machine learning engineer or as a software engineer and then shift to ml?

Hi everyone, I am a master student and recently started my studying with focus on ml. As an unexperienced person in the industry(except some internships not in ml or ai), I want to know what to do during these two years of my studying to make myself marketable and how to enter the industry. Since I have looked at some job requirements for ml, I am concerned that it won't be easy to find a job in this field without a phd. I would appreciate any help and insight.

Probably software engineering being general has more options.

basically, machine learning and Artificial intelligence is totally based on mathematics .So,if you already good in math then you should spent your time in learning programming languages and if you not then you should improve your maths first and then go for it.
