if java its your first language get your hands on "Learning Processing" by Dan Shiffman.
it's an introductory course about the Processing IDE. www.processing.org
Additionally/alternatively there is a list of videos available on Dan Shiffman youtube channel "The coding Train".
The Book, the videos and the Processing IDE itself were all developed for beginners and people that don't code for living.
It helped and it still helps me a lot.

I have 4 Java books.
Heads First Java - Easiest to understand and my favorite
Learning Java by building android games - Good. Covers basics and Android GUI
More Do-it-yourself Java games - Another good book about GUI. not big on the basics, but good at what it does. most code is presented with blanks for you to fill in. answers to the codes are in the back.
Beginning programming with Java for dummies - DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.. This book is terribly written, confusing, and needs to go far away from anyone trying to learn anything

You can try Head first java book, but not everyone likes the "playful" style of it.
