There is no truly easy way, it takes time and effort; but at least you can prevent making it unnecessarily hard on you. The biggest mistake is to go about it too theoretically, reading too much and doing too little. Of course you need to learn the elements of the language, that's obvious. But you should from day one try to write working programs with it, solving tasks. In the beginning they will be short and simple, but after a while you'll be able to tackle more and more complex stuff. Ideally you'll find something you may use yourself. But as long as you don't know what to do or it seems all too hard, you can try to solve practice tasks, like you find them in code coach or coding assignments. Just choose something that feels solvable. Not only true for C and Java, but also other languages - and even many completely different things.

For c write lots of Gotos because they are bad and should not be used. Also segmentation faults are a good thing to learn. With Java, get an open source java gui program and mess it up with bad user interface unimprovement and programmer art.
