Do you feel you are an expert in programming?

I don't have much professional experience in programming other than developing few websites/mini apps for my friends and near ones. So I am definitely nowhere near an expert. How and when can one claim that he is an expert in programming/coding?

In my opinion, it is impossible to be an expert in programming. This is a very big field. But you can become an expert in some specific fields like PHP backend, Java backend, frontend and etc. But even these fields are big, because there are a lot of things to know, a lot of different frameworks and of course the new versions of languages and their tools are released periodically.

when you know most programming algorithms and concepts, and be completely comfortable learning a new language since you only need to know syntax to apply programming concepts but you don't need to be an expert. there are so many professional coders who stumble on something like making fizzbuzz or tic tac toe. just worry about improving yourself, and if you're into this sort of thing; make the world better with your code. and hey, if you make money off it, that's nice too.

I've been programming for over 10yrs in several different languages. Built several apps, sites, programs etc. I still wouldn't even come close to considering myself an expert. Out of those that I know that do program, including those that do it as a profession, there is maybe 1 that you could consider an expert (at least in his narrow field of programming). Programming is a state of constant learning and improving.
