Headfirst Java second edition is pretty neat when you're starting off. The book starts off simply and really works it way up. Plenty of pictures and puzzles to get your mind thinking. Afterwards, you should be comfortable, that's when you should check out Effective Java.

Personally i read Big Java which is kind of old now so, Just as an advice try to look for more upto date books.
