How do you study?

Sometimes I find it difficult to retain things I'm learning. How do you people like to study? Any tips to help remembering lessons? I sit in my lounge room, cup of tea and a pen and notebook and write down as I "learn" Then review the notes and highlight important sections. This has not turned out to be very effective.

That cup of tea with a pen and a book approach works for almost all academic subjects except for programming. You need to get your hands all dirty with codes and errors in order to actually memorise the basic syntaxes.

1. Write some code (without referring to any notes). 2. Run the code. 3. For every error found, do a press-up. 4. Try to remove errors. 5. Go back to step 2, unless all the errors are gone or your arms have fallen off.

well if I don't understand something I always review the tutorial and rewrite it, with repetitive writing codes somehow I get my head arround. and don't forget to exercise everyday
