I don't understand why in a challenge we lose with greater no. Of xp if a match is of less xp?

i just lose a match with -29 xp but the match was for 3 xp... how is this happening...

losing to someone which is lower level than you results in you losing greater XP than he/she loses, all the while you can gain much less XP than him/her
