Why it is a good practice to write "<br />", instead of "<br/>"?

Why do we need to add a space? I saw that it is not necessary, but most of the people do this.

I guess it is just a convention to make the markup better readable. the image tag is also closed with a space usually.

Kinda like putting tabs so the tags arent all stacked up its just so it can be read better
