Semantic HTML is the use of HTML markup to reinforce the semantics, or meaning, of the information in webpages and web applications rather than merely to define its presentation or look. Semantic HTML is processed by traditional web browsers as well as by many other user agents.

A semantic element clearly describes its meaning to both the browser and the developer.
Examples of non-semantic elements: <div> and <span> - Tells nothing about its content.
Examples of semantic elements: <form>, <table>, and <article> - Clearly defines its content.

Semantic tags are used to understand the code to programmer previously only div was used as container for various element of carious section of page

Ex- header of page in a div
navigation link in a div
4-5 div for main contents
Div for footer which created confusion for coder to analyse code.

But now there is a sematic tag for each purpose
You can use header tag for header section,nav for navigation links, main,article,section for content aside for adds/additional info , footer for footer section.
And it makes easy for coder to analyse different section of code in one view even he came after a month to his/other's code (having semantic tags).
