Maybe you meant lambdas.
In that case they are function that do not deserve a name.
They are never necessary, in fact you can always give a name to a function.

myfunc = (lambda a, b : a+b)
similar as:
def myfunc(a, b):
return a+b
#its mostly used for one-line codes / expressions
