Is it possible to be a good programmer without competitive programming? How is it possible?

For example becoming a good programmer without participating in group challenges.

Of course, most people nowadays do competitive programming just to acquire the first or win the challenge, they don't realize they really need to learn or memorize what they are doing or take a deep analysis, some don't even understand the code they write but they just do it for the competition sake.

Of course, definitely not all programmers have to be good at competitive programming. Some just take longer to think for solutions than others. And competitive programming has it's ups and downs too.
