Should i be spending more time on Understanding the Data and gathering insights about it or focus mostly on ML or DL?

As a learner i find it quite interesting spending more time on exploring my data and finding potential insights. I sometimes dont find the need of using ML algorithms to answer my questions. I see many people when it comes to Data science interviews, they seem to be mostly focused on ML and DL and not much about understanding the data in depth.
I need guidance about it from experienced people in this field. How i should go about it, should i spend more time on ML or DL and if that's what is going to help me in getting the jobs.
