(...) Knowing that the code we create might help someone somewhere in some small way, or even inspire someone else to create something better. We as programmers have the power to change the way others see technology and in turn the world, whether it through a simple website, an assembly line, a mobile app, 3d effects, or even teaching tech like this app this one. We have the privilege to be born at a time where accessing this power is so simple, to have networks of like minded individuals that not only have a share in our projects but our passion for coding. Who am I to not partake in this gift. That is why I code because I couldn't possibly take this opportunity for granted.

why ugh...I remember watching some movie, and this hacker guy had the power to tear down or build up because he could code because that's what our world is somewhat built on. I thought wouldn't it be cool to do that, mess with peoples profiles, impress my friends. But what I ended up learning that there's much more to programming. Like what @chriss said the ability to create, to cause to become, to change and watch grow.

I was on High School, maybe 8 years ago and I was not so sure what to do after finishing it until, one day, our Computer Professor told us she would teach us how to code. We made Pascal programs all the year that solved maths problems, not so complex of course. I was 16 years then and I realized I wanted to do it for living. I entered studying Information System Engineering in University and then I prepared myself in more nowadays technologies like C++, Java, Prolog, Haskell, Java Android, PHP, HTML, CSS and so on (many of them I learned them or perfectionated them using internet to find out material to learn, which amazingly is free). I learn many languages and Programming paradigms, despite I general use some of them and not all, I learn sometimes coding in other languages as a hobby. So well, I'm 24 now, I'm about to get graduated from University, and I had jobs that envolves coding, I like it. And all begined with simple programs in Pascal so far ago. I'm happy coding. Everyone would try it at least once and see if they like it.

Started in school as a requirement to graduate. Learned a few languages (C/C++, Java, Assembly). Gave me a headache at first and found it boring due to the Hello World stuff. Realizing there is more to these language, I started to learn more and got curious on how they are used and how I can make the most out of them. Without prior training, I now know JavaScript, SQL, Perl, HTML, CSS, etc. I realized its fun to code especially when it teaches you that you have the power to create something out of nothing no matter how big or small that is and whether you are working on it by yourself or with a team.

In regard of what Ignaco just wrote developping is for people don't know what to do and no money, got free tools xDD More seriously I was also a little bit in that case, didn't really feel good with the school system. I wanted to make videos specials effects/3D... so I started to learn that but at the same time I had scientist spirit so felt a little bit frustrating to only design but got a science background. I finally switched to website creations for finally being happy to mix logical and graphics, I love to mix program and animation. Finally today I'm in a print company but where I got lucky is that I'm mixing graphics, programming for print AND for web cause that's about web to print... :3 no road is straight I guess.
