Why use a separate tag for big text ?

why should we use a separate tag for big text ? I mean we can use the font size tag right ?

I think <big> has do with SEO. Whereas, <font size=x> tag is more of visual presentation tag and it is no more supported in HTML5

Many of the strange tags in html can be seen as hangovers from the early days of the internet when the only thing that could be on a webpage was text. Remember there was a time when html was the only web language.
