I desperately want a career change. Is C# the answer?
I despise my current job so much it eats at me on a daily basis, I get nightmares thinking about the next day. I'm overworked doing menial automation tasks and learn nothing new. Currently the only technology I'm allowed is VBA and MSaccess for any sort of backend database. I feel like I'm destroying my future potential by staying in a barely middle class income job. I've automated the reconciliation of accounting processes and report building, but I want to take it further with a real language and a real company. Will learning C# grant me better opportunities?

I started in software development the same way you are now. I hated my previous career but found my niche when I started automating my job. I quit my job and returned to college and earned my diploma in software development. I've found that prior experience in other industries, especially where understanding basic business processes are concerned have become very beneficial in understanding the use cases you could be developing for. Though you hate your job now I wouldn't dismiss what you've gained from it and carry the experience with you if you choose to pursue a career in software development. I personally love developing with C# and the .Net framework. I highly recommend it. There are a lot of career opportunities no matter what language you choose. Though my preference is C# don't close yourself off from other languages. There is a lot to learn ... Java is very similar to C# too. However I find the IDE used to develop using C# is far better and both languages can create cross platform programs. I suggest if you can't tolerate what you are doing now and you're finding you love programming, seriously consider and plan for continuing education in the field.

Short answer is yes. But is you want to stay in the test field, with c# knowledge you can do automate testing. On the other way you could be a programmer, software developer etc-etc
