If you are asking for career advice, you are in the wrong place, and certainly without knowing your circumstances, interests and strengths, nobody is more qualified to make that call than yourself.
If you are interested in programming then give it a shot. IT is intertwined with each and every branch of economy, art, and science. Even if your main interest is in pharma, you will still find many areas where applying IT knowledge can lead to exciting opportunities.

I think there can be even more sides to this argument. Supply and demand [of programming] has no geographical boundaries, so I would argue that the greater abundance of skilled an even unskilled IT workforce in China, India, Russia and other countries, does have an impact on the US job market, as far as wages are concerned. The physical workforce is more bound to location (but manufacturing is a counterexample that is very often outsourced).
In many industries, robotization and automation is hitting a level where the workers need vastly different skills, this affect even areas like farming or transportation. A farmer of the future will need to know how to program a drone, rather than drive a tractor. It is unavoidable that some professions will radically change and some will be lost and forgotten. The way the world works today, is vastly different from 50 years ago, and change is ever acceleraring.

Maybe all this is not helpful as career advice. People need to keep an open mind, ready for lifelong learning.
