what if the creator of jQuery suddenly discontinues jQuery?

I mean... does he/she or they even have the power to do such thing? Could they just get rid of jQuery if they wanted to? therefore js wouldn't recognize code that is in jQuery and most websites would crash -- depending on how much and how they used jQuery on their site?
