What are the merit and demerits of hidding the identity?

Even if nobody knows who you really are, your IP and online personality defines you. Your character still exists. Nonetheless, anonymity has granted lots of people the ability to do things (often bad things) they wouldn't do IRL with their identity known. This simply reflects their actual character. In contrary to the description, these people are full of fear beneath their facade (unless the anonymity has been put to the use of public good).
