Statistic fundamentals to learn before starting R

I understand the importance of data science and its two most related languages: R and Python. Do you guys suggest any statistical fundamentals I should learn to have a smoother start with R and where are the excellent resources to learn/practice them?

That is always good to know appropriate math topics for understanding what would need to be done with the data to achieve a goal.
