How to put an image on a canvas

Hi, i'm doing a game for a school project. and i need to make a grid. in this way i would like to scan a page of my school book and put It as an image on my canvas. can i do that ? how ? is there an alternative way with a similar result ?

i am working with javafx, is this working ? (i'm not at home atm)
