What is the amount of time/ how long should a person spend in a day or week to learn programming?

For a student studying something not related to programming or someone working in a firm with no links to programming, if he/she is interested in programming,, how much time is appropriate for the person to spend learning in such a way it doesn't affect what he/she's doing and at the same time gain valuable knowledge while learning to code..

Minimum an hour a day. But it depends on you and your time table. Utilising your Free time for learning is a great idea. Sit back and think of the time of inactivity of yourself and decide that you are giving that time to learning and try to increase the practice time everyday. I am also a student and but daily study books related to programming, whenever I feel bored of my regular studies. Anyway remember that "Practice makes man perfect" and go on.....👍👍👍👍

if you are good at programming you can practice a lot but be patient because things do not always come right away

Excellent question deserves more upvotes. I think it's better to spend a decent amount every few days and just a little between to keep it fresh. Making something, anything, even random crap nobody will see is good. I learned by making crappy MS-DOS games. I've still only ever made 1 game (although I worked on a project a few years back but my role was pretty humble C stuff, not the game, just part of the engine). The point is to challenge yourself but not impossibly (you're not gonna make the next Tekken game, Facebook app, etc for a while). Just keep with small things that maybe might be useful to yourself or friends/colleagues and work on them when you can. I suppose this app is useful there as challenges take only a few minutes and refresh your memory. Hope that helps.

As much time as you want/can the more you practice the more you will learn and retain. I spend about 4hrs or more a day.

You learn faster when you spend more time on it. Only limiting factor is your concetration and free time. On average, concentration starts to drop after about 4 hours of coding in one day so further learning and working will be less effective. But it all depends of each man individually.

You can spend 1 or 2 hours but it also depends on your grasping power
