Can JavaScript be used to create apps? Since it's a programming language.

I researched about it and found that some social media apps like Facebook have used JS, just wanted to be sure and that am not understanding things completely differently.

JavaScript is quite powerfull, you can make programs working in the browser and with some compiler make out of them stand alone aplications.
