well as far as i know it uses one of the most secretly kept vulnerability of older versions of windows. and yeah microsoft has released a patch up for this.

I think it's a really bad case of ransomware, and it actually hit hard on many victims, and this trend is not about to go away. Drastic measures should be taken to stay safe against these threats, using solutions like Cyberbit (which I personally know and can happily recommend) is something that organizations and enterprises should do. Private users should use firewall and latest versions of antivirus.
