Understanding code is understanding how things work, which is main guide to figure out how to hack it or patch a flaw. So it is veeeery important.

A person that just uses tools other made, and doesn't really know what they do isn't hacker, it is called script kiddie.

if you're trying to reverse engineering something then you must have a decent knowledge of assembly language without proper knowledge of assembly language you cannot reverse engineer any single software, so having a proper knowledge of assembly is key to become a good hacking skills.
