Explicit pointers as in c/cpp is good or bad???

Question

I know there are a hell of uses with pointers. They are fun to learn(I am joking...Every textbook starts with this sentence).Linked list, queue etc can easily be manipulated with them. But a powerful language like Java deliberately removed explicit pointers??
What is your opinion??All answers are appreciated :-)
