What is the differences between subscripted and superscripted?

when i saw it in learning, both don't make any difference.
any suggestions?

sub is under like with H2O, the 2 is subscribted.
sup is above like with x^2, thr 2 is supscripted (not now, but if you write the power of something on paper yoi usually write the 2 higher and smaller)
