Which programming language do you need when creating a website of an application, and what do you have to learn?

For a website, use html/css/javascript.

For web application, I choose Java. You can learn Java completely from basic to advanced (also creating web application) in http://javabasictoadvanced.blogspot.com

The previous answers are correct for basic web application, however it is much better to learn also Python and use Django to build dynamic web applications that would permit you to expand the web application with users, front and back - admin side and etc. So based on what you will need is good to start with:

1. HTML
2. CSS
3. JavaScript
4. Python
5. MySQL

and don't get "scared" most of the code logic is the same for the different languages, so after learning the first the rest is coming very easy.
