How do I apply what I'm learning? (Python)

I feel really dumb asking this, but How do I apply this stuff? I got into coding because it is a promising career, but I feel kind of like someone who is trying to learn Photoshop but has no idea you can use it to edit photos. what does creating an app actually look like? What else is involved? I'm so out of my element I don't even know what questions to ask! I thought I'd figure it out more as i go, but I'm half way through the python course and I still don't really have any idea what i can do with this.

Hi, I just finished watching a webinar with elite people that work for Microsoft, IBM and Snapchat and based on what they said the best way to apply what you learn is by creating a project. Type it into Google and see what ideas are floating around that catch your attention.
