well...
it realy depends on what you want to do:

Java is more of a universal language so that we can run programs everywhere. Not really that sagnificant this day and age since we can now do this easily with other languages now. more or less.

Php (which is not dead btw) is more for web servers and helps with functionality of a web site dependibg how you use it.

which is easier and more benefical?
java is easier since php you need understanding of html, BUT i my opinion, try to learn both or as much as you can. you never know when you will get a contract that needs at least basic understanding one or both (or even more) languages.

In conclusion, try to expand your knowledge, knowing more may help you in the long run.
