Difference between HTML 4 & HTML 5

There are many. From a broader perspective, HTML was a simple language for laying out text and images on a webpage, whereas HTML5 can be viewed as an application development platform that does what HTML does that and more, including better support for audio, video, and interactive graphics.

It has a number of new elements, supports offline data storage for applications, and has more robust exchange protocols.

HTML has various versions:2.0, 3, 3.2, 4.01, 5 & 5.1. HTML 5.1 is the latest. The main difference between all these is that newer version have newer codes & have improvements. For example in HTML 5, there are many new codes like audio,video, canvas & much more.

HTML5 introduced some new tags that aren't so useful since the same thing can be done with HTML4.

HTML5 has some tags that does not work in some browsers today. Focus in learning HTML now, you will not need the 5 version.

As an example, its a mistake using <section> as a wrapper. There are many mistakes when using HTML5 tags. Look at the HTML5Doctor site for the article "Avoiding Common HTML5 Mistakes".
